Sex Ed

Alan Cumming
was in the store yesterday
(he's Nightcrawler,
you know), and he asked
me about my "Use One"
condom pin, and I told
him about my father's
high-school sex ed
teacher, Mr. Manlee,
a former sailor who
told the boys about
his experiences in
foreign ports,
and about Nancy
Balaban, who is my
grandparents' generation,
and who had no kind of
instruction until she was
in college, and then had
to take a marriage class
(and then only because
she was engaged) in which
the teacher was meant to
divulge the secrets of the
marital union
using two mannequins
that went from head to waist,
and about my teacher
in high school, who would
say to her students, "Now,
when you lose your virginity,
you're going to think of me."
He said, fear is never a good
thing in teaching, but in this case,
it seems to have been effective
for a time, but now HIV
is increasing among the 18-30
demographic in the states
and I told him about how
my old roommate
used to make fun of me for
getting screened regularly
("Have you been having
unprotected sex again?"--
come on, dude) and a PSA I'd
seen, made by seniors in a
nursing home, who promote safe
sex with more enthusiasm for life
than I'm usually able to muster.
He said he'd look it up. And by then
Mr. Cummings glasses were done being adjusted.
