Patient
When my hip broke into pieces,
bits of family drew to San Francisco
where the patient lay, her pacing body shushed.
I ate by rote. Calm nurses wielded needles.
I dreamt of castles encrusted with fish.
The pain insisted like a wife. I ate by rote.
